Christmas Flowers

In North America flowers like Poinsettia, Christmas cactus and Christmas Rose are used.

  • Poinsettia was considered a prized symbol of purity by the ancient Aztecs who were the ruling tribe in the Central Mexico during the contact with Europe. As a result after centuries the early Christians made Poinsettia their treasured Christmas flower. This is a bright red flower which blooms in the very season of Christmas eve. It is used as a Christmas flower. The bright red colour of this flower makes for a beautiful appearance. The colour adds a very aesthetic and vintage looking Christmas decoration in the winter months.
  • The next flower that we are going to talk about, is the Christmas Cactus. Like the name suggests already, this flower is a species of cactus which blooms during the festive time of Christmas. It is also called the Orchid cactus. The stems of this plant are pendulous and make for amazing hanging baskets. one can colour these too and add lights to these to make beautiful decoration pieces. There are various cactus species that are sold for the purposes of Christmas decorations.
  • When we talk about Christmas flowers, we simply can't forget the Christmas Rose. It is a plant which is considered to be a Christmas flower in its true sense in many places across the world. Also known as the snow rose or the winter rose, this flower is from the tropical lands of Asia. It blooms in the winter months and is a very classy decoration piece for the festive season of Christmas. Another plant called the Helleborus niger is also a kind of Christmas rose used for the purpose of Christmas beautification.

From North America we come to the European land where there are different flowers for the purpose of Christmas use. These flowers like the above mentioned flowers, make for lovely looking ornamental items to be used for the celebrations.

  • Holly

In most European countries Holly is associated with the Christmas eve. The wreaths of Holly are hung on the doors. The sprigs of this plant are used to trim the Christmas puddings.

  • Ivy

Ivy is another Christmas flower used in Europe to celebrate Christmas. the leaves of this plant symbolise resurrection and eternity.  The ivy leaves are associated to the Egyptian god Osiris, and the Greco-Roman god, Attis. Both of these gods were resurrected from their death.

  • Mistletoe

The plant's origin dates back to the Pagan ages. The Druid priests used this plant to celebrate winters, two hundred years before Jesus Christ's birth. With the passage of time, it was used as a Christmas decoration. There are many legends regarding the mistletoe. In the modern tradition it is considered very special to exchange a kiss with someone special under a sprig of a Mistletoe plant.

Apart from these plants and the flowers of these plants, many other flowers can be used for the purpose of Christmas decorations. This is the time when tradition blends with the trends. So, for people who live in places which are warmer during the Christmas time, there are an array of summer flowers which can be used for the beautification purposes.
